The M1 Sherman was a game changer for the allies becuase it was able to go toe to toe with a panzer and win. the predeceser to the M1 Sherman was the M3 lee which had the same gun but becuase they needed a new tank it had many flaws and used a older chases from the M3 Strauts and the gun was mounted on the side. although the M1 Sherman was able to kill them panzers they had very bad ammo placement and if it got shot anywhere it would burst into flames.
