the M1 abrams was made in the coldwar but was outdated by the late 20th century and they needed a new tank. becuase the M1A1 abrams had shown that it was a good tank and met the standards of its time thjey decided to make the new tank a modern version of the M1 abrams and called it the M1A2 abrams
